Rent the Runway Basics

  • How does Rent the Runway work?

    There are two ways to rent: Rent for a specific date or subscribe to Unlimited. 

    To rent for a specific date:

    1. Find It: Filter by color, length, trend and more to find the best look. We have thousands of dresses from 250+ designers.

    2. Reserve It: Choose a delivery and return date, and rent for 4 or 8 days. Add a backup size for free and you can also add a different dress for $32.50.

    3. Receive It: The dress will be delivered via UPS or courier service (available for Manhattan addresses below 125th Street) to your home, office or hotel by 8pm on your delivery date.

    4. Return It: Returns are free! Place items in the provided packaging (which includes a pre-paid label). Take the packaging to a UPS drop box or schedule a pickup by 12pm on your rental return date. We’ll handle the dry cleaning.

    To rent through Unlimited:

    1. Subscribe to Unlimited: Sign up to get designer dresses, accessories, tops, skirts and more. 

    2. Select 3 items and keep as long as you want: Once you sign up, choose your first three items. When you receive them, you control how long you keep each piece. Shipping and insurance are included. 

    3. Exchange anytime: Send 1, 2, or 3 items back and select the same number for your next shipment. We handle the dry cleaning. Cancel anytime. 

  • What if I accidentally stain or damage the dress?

    We understand that some wear and tear may be inevitable, and the $5 insurance fee covers minor stains and damage. (Insurance is included for Unlimited members.) However, significant damage and theft aren't covered under the insurance. If the item is damaged beyond repair, the fee is the retail price of the item. If the item is never returned, the fee is double the retail price of the item.

  • Do you ship internationally?

    At this time we only ship orders within the U.S., including Hawaii and Alaska. Orders must also be returned from within the U.S.

  • Will the dresses need to be pressed upon arrival?

    We do our best to ensure your dresses arrive wrinkle-free. Each dress is steamed and pressed before being sealed in plastic and placed in a garment bag. If you receive a dress with slight creases, please try steaming the garment on low heat or contact a stylist for advice.

  • How are the dresses cleaned?

    We take great care to clean the dresses. The team at our warehouse in Secaucus, NJ, uses a variety of techniques to ensure that each style is dry cleaned thoroughly, steamed and pressed, inspected for quality, and packaged with care so that it’s ready for you to wear.

  • Why do some items show a varying rental price?
    Price varies based on availability. We recommend searching by date so you’ll see the specific price, or click the desired date when you find an item you love.

  • How is Rent the Runway environmentally friendly?

    Every rental is one less dress that sits in a closet never to be worn again. Each time you rent, you’re helping to conserve all of the resources that go into producing a single piece of clothing, from the materials to the energy that powers factories. Renting, at its very essence, is recycling.

    The making of a dress is just the beginning. Renting is a conscious decision to invest in the real thing, not the knockoff. Today’s fast fashion (we’re not going to name names…) is literally made to fall apart as a means to drive frequent sales. Every season, clothes are thrown out and new ones are purchased, only for the cycle to repeat itself. Renting high-quality designer pieces (that can be worn for years) helps decrease the 11 million tons of textile waste the U.S. produces every year.

    Sustainability goes beyond the dresses on our website. We take an eco-friendly approach to shipping and packaging too. In 2015, we traded our plastic mailing bags, cardboard boxes, and vinyl garment bags for reusable carrying cases. That’s converting three pieces of packaging into just one—saving approximately 287 tons of waste from landfills in a year. Not to mention, the carrying cases are incredibly chic, if we do say so ourselves.

    Every day at our offices, we continue to challenge ourselves to develop innovative solutions to ensure that Rent the Runway will always be on the cutting-edge of fashion and sustainability.

  • How do I use merchandise credit?

    Upon checking out, your merchandise credit will be automatically applied to your shopping bag. If you don’t use the entire credit, the remainder will be stored in your RTR account for future purchases. Merchandise credits don’t expire and can be used toward the purchase of anything on the site.

  • Was I charged twice?

    Your credit card will only be charged once when you place your order. The other transaction is a pending authorization, a common bank practice to ensure sufficient funds and account authenticity. This authorization will clear usually within 48-72 hours. If you need help speeding up the process, contact your bank directly.

  • What is Rent the Runway Private Label?

    Slate & Willow and Ella Carter are our private label brands. Slate & Willow is a feminine, playful dress and accessory line created by Rent the Runway. Ella Carter is a classic yet modern jewelry line, also created by Rent the Runway. We’ve learned what details customers love, and each season we design new collections featuring popular trends, styles and colors.

    We list a “value” for our private label items. For us, “value” is based on our cost of production of the item, such as design and materials, plus our standard markup. “Value” is not the retail price, and should not be used as a reference price point on similar items for sale. 

  • When will my card be charged?

    You’re charged at the time you make your reservation — it’s similar to booking a flight.

How to Rent

  • What if I'm not in love with my dress?

    It can be stressful not knowing if a dress will fit... that's why we created the Love Your Look Promise. Here's how we'll make sure you absolutely love your look (we won't rest until you do!):

    • Call us at 800-509-0842 if nothing fits. We'll exchange your dress in time for your event (with $12.95 overnight shipping). 
    • If you live near one of our stores stop by and walk out with a new dress (no appointment necessary). 
    • In NYC or Chicago? We'll have Uber bring you a new dress in less than an hour. 
  • What time will my dress arrive?

    Deliveries are made between 8am and 8pm during weekdays and Saturdays. We provide tracking information so you can see when your package is out for delivery. All Manhattan deliveries (below 125th Street) are made by courier. If you would like to specify a delivery time window, please contact a stylist a few days before your delivery date. We will do our best to meet your request. Manhattan customers are required to sign for deliveries, so address deliveries accordingly. Mailrooms, front desks, and concierges are able to sign on your behalf.

  • Can you deliver to a hotel or another address besides my home?

    Sure! If you're shipping to a hotel, please put the hotel name in the company field and the reservation guest in the attention field. Please make sure the hotel concierge is expecting your delivery.

  • Is a signature required for delivery?

    Outside Manhattan: No signature required!

    In Manhattan: Customers are required to sign for deliveries, so address them accordingly. Mailrooms, front desks, and concierges are able to sign on your behalf.

  • Do you ship to P.O. boxes?

    We don’t, please enter a valid residence, company or hotel address for a successful delivery.

  • What if the dresses I ordered don't fit?

    If this happens, we can help. Choose one of the following options:

    Option 1: We'll help you find another dress

    If you call before 3pm, we can overnight you another dress in time for your event. Email us and we'll ship you an available style for $12.95. Or if you live near one of our stores, you can swap your original dress for another style, no appointment necessary. If the style you select is more expensive, you will be charged the difference in price. If the style is less expensive, you will be given a merchandise credit for the difference in price.

    Option 2: We'll give you a credit​

    We’re happy to give you a Rent the Runway credit (less the cost of shipping, accessories and saleable items) if none of the dresses in your order fit. 

    To receive a credit, go to the “Orders” section of your Rent the Runway account and fill out our Return for Fit Request form. Use the provided packaging (which includes a pre-paid label) and return everything to us within 24 hours of receiving it. Credits do not expire, but we do not issue partial credits or credits for accessories or intimates.

Finding the Perfect Dress

  • What’s a second style?

    When you add two dress styles to your cart for the same rental delivery date, the lower priced style will automatically discount to $32.50. Give yourself some options for your big night out, or step out in style for two different events.

  • What are My Hearts?

    See a dress or accessory you love? Click on the small heart to the right of the item. This saves your favorites so that you can easily compare and find dresses/accessories at a later date. If you want to keep track of specific looks for a special event, make a shortlist.

  • What’s a shortlist?

    It’s a way of organizing your hearts by event. Want to keep track of your favorite sequined dresses for your birthday party? Click the heart next to an item you love, and you’ll be prompted to create a shortlist. Click “create new shortlist” and follow the easy instructions. Then the next time you heart something, you’ll see the option to add it to whichever shortlist you choose.

  • What is a backup size?

    We offer a free second size for one dress in your order to help you find the perfect fit. If the backup size for the dress you want isn't available, you can also rent a second style in the same or lower price tier for just $32.50.

  • How long is a rental?

    Our most common rentals are 4 or 8-day reservations. We recommend you book your order to arrive 1-2 days prior to your event to ensure you have plenty of time to get the perfect look. Think of it this way:

    Day 1 - Receive your dress and try it on

    Day 2 - Accessorize and find the right shoes for the dress

    Day 3 - Wear it (and work it) at your event

    Day 4 - Return your rental at your nearest UPS location by 12pm

  • When should I make a reservation for a dress?

    You can book a reservation up to 4 months in advance, and schedule your order to arrive 1-2 days before your event. We also offer same-day delivery to most of Manhattan and next-day delivery everywhere else in the U.S., as long as you place your order before 3pm EST the day before you’d like your rental to arrive.

  • How can I make changes to my order?

    We want to make it as easy as possible for you to change your order. In the "Orders” section of your “My Account” page, you can see which adjustments can be made. If your order has already shipped, you can’t make any changes. Have questions? Email us and we can help.

  • How do I know if I can make changes to my order?

    You can change most orders in the "Orders” section of your “My Account” page. You’ll see several buttons on the order with all of the different changes you can make.

  • How do I change my shipping address after I’ve already placed my order?
    You can make this adjustment in the “Orders” section of your “My Account” page. Follow these 3 easy steps:
    1. Click the “Change Address” button on the shipment that you’d like to adjust.
    2. Select the new address from your stored addresses or add a new one.
    3. Confirm the change.*

  • How do I change my rental dates after I’ve already placed my order?
    You can make this adjustment in the “Orders” section of your “My Account” page. Follow these 3 easy steps:
    1. Click the “Change Rental Dates” button on the shipment you’d like to adjust.
    2. Select the new rental dates from the calendar provided.
    3. ​Confirm the change.*

Have An Issue With My Order

  • What’s your refund policy?

    We want to make it easy for you, so think thirty.

    Any adjustments made up to 30 days before your rental start date will result in a refund in the form of your original payment.

    Any adjustments made fewer than 30 days before your rental start date will result in a credit to your Rent the Runway account.*

    This policy applies to adjustments such as:

    • Removal of items
    • Change of styles (e.g. changing a style to a less expensive style)
    • ​Order cancellation

    Clearance items and items for sale do not apply to this policy and are final sale.

    *Orders modified or cancelled the same day (within 24 hours) from when they were placed will be refunded to the original form of payment.

  • What's included in the price adjustment I see when changing my order?

    Price adjustments reflect any items that you may added or removed and/or any changes in tax, shipping, and insurance charges. If an adjustment to your order results in a negative balance, you'll be refunded the amount specified.

    Any adjustments made up to 30 days before your rental start date will result in a refund in the form of your original payment.

    Any adjustments made fewer than 30 days before your rental start date will result in a credit to your Rent the Runway account.

  • My order hasn't arrived yet. When can I expect to receive my rental?
    Deliveries are made between 8am and 8pm during weekdays and Saturdays. We provide tracking information so you can see when your package is out for delivery. 
  • Can I exchange or return my intimates or beauty product purchase?

    Intimates or beauty products are non-refundable and cannot be returned or exchanged.

  • Can I keep or purchase a dress?

    We only offer our dresses and accessories for rent at this time. Stay tuned for emails about our semi-annual clearance sales where you can purchase select designer styles.

Returning My Order

  • I can't find the lock to secure my return

    If your order arrived in one of our blue garment bags, then it should include a disposable lock that can be used to secure the zippers during the return transit to our fulfillment center.  The lock looks like a zip tie and should be located inside the zippered pocket of the garment bag.

    If you are not able to locate it, you can still return your order, but please secure the zipper with a paperclip or tie to ensure it does not come loose in transit.


  • What if my rental ends on a Sunday or holiday?
    Although UPS is closed Sundays and holidays, you can still take your return packaging to a UPS drop box (click here to find the nearest drop off location). If you can't make it to a drop box on your rental return date, please mail your order back by 12pm the next business day. 
  • What if my items don't fit in my pre-paid return envelope?
    Send the extra items back on your return date using 2-day shipping. Email a photo of the receipt to and we'll reimburse the credit card you used (up to $20) for your Rent the Runway order. You should be reimbursed within 4 days of when you sent the email. 
  • How do I return my order?

    ​If you received your order in a blue carrying case:

    1. Place the clothes in the bottom of the case’s main compartment (the hangers are yours to keep). Put accessories in their original packaging and place them in the accessory pockets. We handle the dry cleaning.
    2. Tear the UPS return slip off this card and insert it face-up into the outside pocket. Missing your return slip? Email and we can send you a new one to print off.
    3. Tuck the handles inside the case. Fold it back to its original shape and zip closed. Thread the lock through the zippers. NOTE: The lock can only be used once, so don’t fasten it until you’re ready to ship your items.
    4. Visit a UPS drop box and place the entire case inside. No box required.


    If you received your order in a box:

    Pack your order: Place accessories in their matching bar-coded packaging and put them and any clothing in the provided pre-paid envelope(s).The hangers are yours to keep, and we handle the dry cleaning.

    Return your order: Drop off the return envelope(s) at your nearest UPS drop box.

  • Late Fee Policy
    We take pride in meeting and exceeding the expectations of all of our customers by providing an exceptional experience that begins with an on-time delivery. When a dress or accessory is not returned to us on time by a customer, or is lost or stolen, it impacts our ability to deliver on our promises to other customers and it harms our business. Because our products are unique and not replaceable, we cannot purchase additional products to fulfill orders due to late returns. We rely on our customers to return our products on time so that we can continue to fulfill orders for other customers. Please review our Late Fee Policy below which explains how to return your rental products and outlines the late fees charged for late returns.
    Returning Products

    - The date to send back your rental items is stated in your online invoice. In order to avoid a late fee, you must send back the products you rented in the return packaging provided to you by Rent the Runway. The return service provider is UPS.

    - You must deliver the products to a UPS store located in the United States by 12 p.m. on or before the product return date specified in your order. If you do this, your package will be scanned by UPS by the next day and returned to Rent the Runway on time. Rent the Runway will not cover additional fees incurred due to international shipping. 

    - Please do not leave your rentals with any third party (hotel, mail room, friend) for return as you would still be held liable for any late fees incurred.

    - If you lose the return packaging, you are responsible for returning the item at your own expense by the expected return date, and providing Rent the Runway with a tracking number. Returns should be sent to the following address:

    If you lose or fail to return the Rent the Runway blue carrying case, you will be charged $50.

    Late Fees

    - If you return your rental items late or do not return them at all, a late fee of $50 per day will be charged to the credit card you used for the order (or to any other credit card included on your account). You will be charged up to 200% of the retail value of the products you ordered, plus applicable sales tax. This late fee is in addition to the rental fee for the products.

    - The late fee is payable for each order that is not returned when due, not for each product. For example, if you rented two items in one order, you will be charged $50 per day, not $100 per day in late fees.

    - If you pay us an amount equal to 200% of the retail value in late fees and you still have the product in your possession, the product is yours to keep.

    - If you have not returned a rental item within 20 days after the return date, your late return will be considered a non-return and Rent the Runway will charge your credit card or debit card the maximum late fee, less any fees, plus applicable sales tax that you have already paid.

  • How long does it take to process my return?

    We receive most returns within 2 business days, and you’ll get an email confirming that your order has arrived safely. If you’ve returned your order early because it didn’t fit, and you’ve completed your Return for Fit Request Form (, your credit will be processed within 5-7 business days of receiving your order.

  • Why is Unlimited $139/month?

    Unlimited gives you access to 3 designer pieces at a time (you can choose from our selection of thousands of items). You can swap items for new ones as often as you like. We built the program to maximize your options — you can transform what you already own with new trends and dress for all the occasions in your life (from work to weekend).

    We've found that the average customer gets more than $1000 worth of items per shipment, and she swaps them several times a month. So the average customer receives about $30,000 worth of designer clothing per year from her Unlimited subscription, with some customers receiving close to $50,000 a year. Since a subscription costs $1668 per year, that makes it about 5% of the value you'll receive.

    Why do we price the program at $139? We want Unlimited to be a transformative part of millions of women's lives, just like a subscription to Netflix or Spotify. To do this and make the business sustainable, the subscription price has to cover our costs of buying the inventory, shipping it, dry cleaning it, storing it, etc. We are dedicated to building a program that you love and will continue to be transparent whenever we add additional features that are important to you.

  • How does Unlimited work?

    If you subscribe to Unlimited, you will be entitled to rent up to three (3) Products at any time from a range of Products designated on the Site. If you have three (3) Products, you must return at least one (1) Product to us in order to be eligible to receive another. When we receive any returned Unlimited Program Products from you, the next shipment we send you will contain the same number of Unlimited Program Products that you have returned. The subscription fees include shipping and limited insurance.

    What products are not covered?

    The following products are not eligible for the Unlimited subscription: bridal accessories and select items from Decades Vintage, WGACA Vintage, Marchesa, Judith Leiber and Moschino, and any dresses with a retail price of $3000 or more. Additional exclusions may apply.

  • How do I pick items for my first Unlimited shipment?

    Once you're an Unlimited member, you will be prompted via email to select 3 items for your first Unlimited shipment. Download our mobile app to select items from your phone or follow these three steps from your desktop computer:

    1. Click "Browse Unlimited" to see all available items.

    2. Filter by dresses, tops, handbags, your hearts and more

    3. Select 3 pieces and hit "Ship Now" after clicking on each item. Click "Confirm" at the top of the page and you're done!

  • How do I exchange an Unlimited item for something new?

    When you're ready, return 1, 2 or 3 of your items in the provided pre-paid envelope and take it to a UPS drop box or schedule a pickup. Package each accessory in the protective bag or jewelry box in which you received it; clothes can be returned without the plastic coverings or hangers. As soon as we receive your return, you will be prompted to select new items.

  • I lost my return envelope for my Unlimited items. How do I return them?

    Send your order via UPS to the address below. Please email us with your new return tracking information. You will be responsible for paying for the shipment. Your next package will include a new return envelope.

  • How Style Packs Work

    Purchase a $25 Style Pack which is redeemable for a styling appointment in stores or online. With the Style Pack purchase you will receive 3, $99 complete looks, redeemable any time. Each $99 look includes 1 dress, 1 backup size and 2 accessories. Choose from 1,000s of pieces with absolutely no designer exclusions! Redeem up to 3 looks within one year.


    Terms & Conditions: Each $99 Look must be redeemed 1 year from the date of purchase of the $25 Style Pack. Valid on 4-day rentals only. If $99 value is not used in full, code cannot be redeemed for cash, credit, gift cards, or used on another $99 Look or rental. Each $99 Look is limited to 1 dress, 1 backup size and 2 accessories. Promo codes cannot be used on existing orders or be combined with other offers or gift cards. $99 value cannot be used towards tax or insurance.

  • How long can I keep a Style Pack rental for?

    At this time, our Style Pack rentals are only available for 4-day rentals. We hope to offer the option to choose a bigger window in the future. If you need assistance choosing your rental dates, please reach out to a Stylist on our team!

  • What does the Style Pack appointment entail?
    • In-Store
      • The appointment consists of (1) 45 minute session. You’ll work one-on-one with a stylist who will help you find new designers and dress silhouettes. You can come with an event in mind or just to try-on and we will help complete your look. You’ll leave with curated selection of dresses and accessories.
    • Online
      • The appointment consists of (1) one on one, 30 minute, personal styling session with one of our Senior Stylists. Not only can your stylist help you find the designer dress best suited for your event, your stylist can also help you find the best accessories to mix/match with your dress of choice. After your appointment, you’ll have a curated selection of styles picked just for you. Set up your time now
  • Why can I only book an appointment 2 weeks in advance?

    Due to the high demand of this package, we can only allot restricted time frames for our appointment process. All of our clients deserve the best experience and we would never want your experience to be lackluster due to overbooking.


  • How does PRO work?
    For $29.95, you will receive free standard shipping and insurance on all orders placed within one year of purchase date. Plus, you will receive a $50 rental credit for your birthday month.
  • Are all PRO orders valid for free shipping?

    Not all orders are valid for free shipping. Standard shipping, plus same-day and Saturday deliveries in Manhattan, are free. If you don't live in Manhattan and need next-day shipping or Saturday delivery, your PRO membership reduces the cost by $9.95.

  • How does my PRO free birthday dress work?
    You’ll receive an email containing your $50 promo code one month before your birthday, and again two weeks before your birthday. Offer is valid on any rental items and has no minimum — happy birthday to you!
  • How do I cancel my PRO membership?
    Email a stylist at Your PRO membership will be renewed one year from your original purchase date unless you cancel. Current memberships are non-refundable once you've placed your first PRO rental order.
